Hard Drive Recovery Case Studies

Fire Damaged Drives

A large global company of Surveyors, Consultants and Analysts sent in 2 drives that had been in a fire. Our engineers examined the drives in the clean room and repaired the internal damage caused by the fire and performed a 100% recovery on both drives within a matter of 2 days.

Encrypted Failed Drive

A global 100 company had a senior manager’s laptop fail while he was travelling on business. Having been on the road for several weeks he did not have an opportunity to backup his information and when the drive failed he called us to recover a wide range of critical documents. As well, the laptop contained encryption software that had not been renewed. We made contact with the encryption supplier to work out a one time deal for access and recovered the executive’s critical data in time for his next trip abroad.

Software Related Failed Drive

A private individual had her MAC fail. She ran a home business developing images and sound for the advertising business and needed these important files recovered and as soon as possible since her business would suffer otherwise. She also told us that she had a wide range of family photos on the drive that were irreplaceable. After determining the drive did not suffer any mechanical failure and was a software related problem, our engineers recovered all of her important files and returned them within hours.

Drive is not recognised by the BIOS

A University sent in a drive that would not boot from any machine. The information on the drive contained critical University papers. The drive turned out to have a system track failure where the microcode used by the manufacturer had become damaged or corrupted. Our engineers managed to overcome the failure using our high level proprietary tools and successfully recover 100% of the data.

Internal Physical Damage

A major, prestigious car manufacturer sent in a drive that they believed had some critical information pertaining to an integral part of their manufacturing facility. The drive had suffered from internal physical failure. Our engineers examined the drive in our Class 100 clean room and managed to get an image. The directory listing showed that the critical information was present and our engineers quickly recovered the information. The recovery saved a job for a major client from being delayed and saved the company millions of pounds in lost production time.

Deleted Files

A well known publisher of a men's lifestyle magazine sent in a drive where over 2000 photo files had been accidentally deleted. Using our sophisticated tools that can recover from deleted files, we managed to recover all of the deleted photos on the same day. The customer managed to meet their publishing deadline for that month’s issue of the magazine.

RAID Recovery Case Studies

Failed RAID 5 Array/SQL Database

A large global document solutions company phoned us on a Monday morning before 8:00am after a RAID 5 array failed over the weekend. They were desperate to recover their SQL database and had the drives delivered within two hours. Our engineers immediately went to work on the assessment and discovered one of the disks had a major mechanical failure. Our engineers in London and Dallas (remotely) worked on the array for two days straight rebuilding the RAID and reconstructing the database. The recovery was a 100% success and we had the customer’s recovered SQL database back in their hands within 3 days.

Failed RAID 5/ Lost SQL Database

A scientific research organisation had one drive in their RAID 5 Array server fail. The RAID rebuilt itself and then another drive failed. They attempted to recover using several RAID cards but could not access their SQL Server database. Our engineers managed to image all the failed drives and discovered a utility had been run prior to the failure which had diagnosed the database as a lost file and converted it into a CHK file. Several copies of the database appeared across the drives. Our engineers managed to successfully locate the correct database and rebuild it. The recovery was 100% successful.

Exchange / Mail Server Recovery Case Studies

Corrupt EDB files/Server

A large UK manufacturing and after market company had their server fail. They urgently needed to recover important private ‘edb’ files. The files had become corrupted by the loss of a log file after an abnormal shutdown. They had attempted a recovery of the files using off-the-shelf data recovery software which, in turn, damaged the files. They also ran several restore and extract processes. Regardless, our engineers were able to recover the edb files, verified the mailboxes with the customer and returned them on a storage drive for restoring on a new server system.

Corrupt EDB files/DDS4 Tape

A nationwide pub company had problems with a DDS4 tape which contained their Exchange server files. The head of the tape had been overwritten rendering it impossible for them to access the data. Our engineers discovered the first section of the tape was completely unreadable and had suffered media damage. They used our proprietary techniques to overcome this and then discovered that all the data was also corrupt. They repaired the corruption and extracted the PST files which were then put on a hard drive. The recovery was 100% successful.

Tape Recovery Case Studies

Failed Backup DLT Tapes/MAC

A medium size UK printing company attempted to recover data from their DLT XT backup tapes. When a recovery was initiated it failed as the tapes seemed to run in a loop until the time out. All the files were MAC data images and text. Our engineers were able to recover the data and download onto a hard drive.

Server and Backup failure/LTO Tapes

A large multi-brand leisure company had their server and backup systems fail. They required all the mailbox data for the senior management group recovered off LTO tapes. During the failure the tapes were damaged and advanced techniques had to be used to extract and recover the data. Prior to loading on to storage media the files were of a size that the directories had to be organised first. 100% of the pst files the company wanted were successfully recovered and loaded on to storage drives, CD’s and DVD’s for the clients operations in the UK and the US.

Other Media Recovery Case Studies

Memory Stick

A global mobile phone service provider sent in a memory stick which had a format error and the customer could not access valuable files. Our engineers managed to fix the format error and image the stick. They recovered all the data which they put onto CD.

Flash Media Card

A couple sent us a Flash media card from their camera which was full of pictures of their recent worldwide trip. The card had been formatted accidentally. Our engineers imaged the card and used our tools to overcome the damage done by the formatting. We recovered all of their photo files onto CD.

Disaster Recovery Case Studies

A £28m Company Saved!

A large automobile dealership suffered a devastating fire at its administrative offices, completely destroying its IT facilities, including the back-up tapes stored in a “fire safe”. Everything was lost – all records of inventory, A/P, A/R, financing, employee pay and taxes…

Seeing no hope, the company began plans to file for bankruptcy the following week. In a moment of inspiration, their operations manager thought to call Data Recovery to inquire about the possibility of recovering their data from their server.

Putting an Incident Response Team in motion immediately, Data Recovery worked around the clock for three days on the RAID drives that had been badly burned and subsequently soaked by the responding firemen. With 23 years of experience in helping companies rebuild after disasters, more than 99% of the data was recovered and returned to the dealership on the fourth day! The company and dozens of jobs were saved.

“I approached two of the listed companies. One did not reply at all, but you did, surprisingly enough on a Sunday; (first impressions count, and you made a good one).”
